Outdoor Pond – The Fish Pond Option

When people are asked to imagine an outdoor pond, most of them will think of a fish pond, making it the most popular type of backyard ponds. One very important thing to remember, a fish pond is not an outdoor aquarium. So if your choice for the pond building hobby is to raise fish this article is for you.

Why build a fish pond? Reasons for that are very different depending the pond owner you ask. For some a fish pond its the main jewel of their backyard. For others the fulfillment of growing and caring for pets that create a magical and relaxing ambient very close to home. Others are looking to a hobby that will add a measure of challenge to build and maintain.

If it's not an outdoor aquarium then what it is? A fish pond is not a container to house some fish in it, it sole purpose is to create an environment where fish can be kept alive, protected and happy. And outdoor pond that will host fish must be carefully planned and maintained with care and attention to be successful.

First of all, a water filter and pump are an absolute necessity to keep the water always clean. Leaves and other kind of debris are a constant trouble, your filter will help you with part of this task but careful planing where to place your pond, keeping it away from problematic trees can save much work in this routine task.

Next thing to consider is your terrain, take measures to avoid contamination from rain water washing part of your garden into the pond. Additionally keep in mind that ground movements will create stress on your pond liner and eventually creating holes where water may leak and contamination may come in.

Remember that your pond is outdoors and therefor your fish is exposed to all the surrounding environment. Take into consideration all weather conditions and specially the more extreme ones. Take measures to protect your fish from predators both from the air and from the ground.

The size of your pond is also an important factor to consider. The pond size and depth should fit the species of fish you are hosting. Goldfish can live in a small pond but Koi can grow to large sizes needing a much bigger pond.

Remember an outdoor fish pond is only successful if the fish is successful.
